When it comes to getting a towbar fitted, the most confusing part for mst people is the electrics. What do I need? Single socket, Double socket, 13 pin, then there is Vehicle Specific electrics, whats that? So here is our guide to choosing your electrics for your towbar fitting If you are towing a Small Trailer, Car Trailer, Motorcycle Trailer, Boat Trailer Etc, then you only need Single Socket Electrics to keep you legal If you are Towing a Caravan, then you will need Double Electrics, the second socket provides power to the caravan lighting circuits, and keeps the fridge working while you are towing, plus it also charges the onboard battery in the caravan. Finally, if your caravan is fitted with reversing lights, then this socket provides the circuit. 13 pin is the modern version of socket combining everything together into one socket, most new trailers and caravans have this. Specific Vehicle Electrics is where it starts to get complicated. On most new vehicles the electronics now control bulb failure systems to advise of a light not working, adjustable suspension systems which detect the added weight of a trailer, the braking system also senses a trailer, reversing sensors are turned off when towing, stability control systems and traction control are adjusted to the load. They may also provide automatic fog cut-out. Because of this Towbar fitters must be trained to cope with the complex systems used, and when fitting the electric components must ensure the vehicle electronics are not comprimised. We advise the fitting of Specific electrics kits which connect into the vehicles wiring harness as the manufacuers recommend they include all the required relays etc, and are the same as the vehicle manufacturers use. They are a higher cost option, but will not invalidate any manufacturers warranties, and will ensure the onboard systems work correctly some vehicles also need a dealer software update, but many we are able to do free of charge at the time of fitting. Soon, all vehicles will require dedicated kits to be fitted.
